Architectural competition for a new congregation centre in Finland, 2022

In 2022 we won an architectural competition for a new Congregation Centre in Piikkiö, Finland.

The competition brief had determined (among others) the following preconditions and requirements for the new building:

  • The building must have eaves that have sufficient width and that function technically well;
  • The building must not have flat roofs or roofs with a minimal slope. Nor is an internal or hidden rainwater disposal system acceptable.
  • The walls must not contain rockwool based insulation materials. The walls should be as simple as possible, massive brick or wooden walls would be preferred.

The competition entry is based, in addition to the above said, on the following beliefs and wishes of its authors:

  • Design the new building in a way which would make it a seamless, natural and harmonious addition to the existing environment and urban fabric instead of creating conflicts between new and existing buildings;
  • Design the new building in such a way that its architectural language, massing and structure as well as choice of materials would stress its public function;
  • Design the new building in such a way, that one could directly or indirectly recognize the features inherent to Finnish building traditions and methods and that its architecture would emphasize the importance of preserving, developing and transcending (passing on?) traditional building methods;
  • Design the building which would be sustainable, beautiful and user-friendly so that many generations to come would love it and like to take care of it.

One of the main ideas of the architectural solution of the new building is to create and emphasize the visual axes between the congregation hall as the most important room of the new building and the old church of Piikkiö. Hence the congregation hall is situated on the axes between the eastern entrance and Piikkiö church. As a result of that the building is parallel to the old congregation centre (2) and an inner courtyrad closed from three sides is created between new and old congregation building. The eastern facade is parallel to the Hepojoentie which helps to improve the urban fabric between the buildng and street. The slope and material of roof are identical to that of the old congregation building (2).
